Signed and Inscribed Record-Tying First Base

As his outstanding 2009 MVP season drew to a close, one more accomplishment remained for Albert Pujols. On the final day of the season, Albert broke the MLB all-time record for most assists at first base in a single season, topping the record of 184 set by Bill Buckner of the Boston Red Sox in 1985.

“It’s a great accomplishment, and I thank God for giving me the opportunity to be able to do that,” said Albert. “Going to Spring Training, I don’t think I was putting it in my mind to try and break the assist record. But my job was to try to be out there and do everything I can to help my ballclub to win.”

Recognizing the significance of the event, the St. Louis Cardinals cut the record-breaking first base into 1” x 1” squares and sold them in a limited edition of 105 pieces at $100 each.

A day earlier, with a toss to pitcher Blake Hawksworth in the eight inning of the October 3 game against the Milwaukee Brewers at Busch Stadium, Albert tied the MLB all-time record of 184 assists. The base features the ‘2009 All-Star Summer’ jewel on all four sides. An MLB hologram (LH702477) affixed to the bottom of the base attests it was used for the entire October 3, 2009 game. A Pujols Family Foundation Certificate of Authenticity will accompany the item.

Before delivery to the winning bidder, the base will be signed by Albert Pujols.
Albert will also add the inscription “Tied MLB first base assists record”.
