SUMMARY:Red Barn Farm Family Day
DESCRIPTION:On one of the most beautiful days of the year\, over 500 members of the Down Syndrome Guild of Greater Kansas City gathered at the Red Barn Farm in Weston\, Missouri. A day of fun was awaiting them at the farm\, located just north of the city. This family event marks the first collaboration between the DSG-KC and the Pujols Family Foundation. \nAs the families arrived\, a warm breeze was blowing through the orchard behind the farm house on this pleasant September afternoon. The farm is open spring through fall\, allowing visitors the chance to experience the farm through the changing seasons. The families were greeted by multiple barns\, a farm house\, thousands of pumpkins\, a very large orchard and an array of family-friendly farm animals. The relaxing country lifestyle was on display as parents and their children were able to step away from the city for an afternoon. \nAfter enjoying a nice lunch\, it was time to experience all the different activities the farm had to offer. Lines were formed for not only the inflatable obstacle course but also for family hayrides. Large piles of pumpkins were stacked around the property allowing for families to capture photos that were perfect enough for a Christmas card. The kids also had the opportunity to interact with the tame goats and feed them a snack. One of the unique attractions of the farm was the chance for each child to ride on a pony. Although some might have a slight fear at first\, that quickly turned into big smiles and laughter as the pony took its first steps. \nThe culmination of a perfect day came as everyone had the opportunity to participate in the watermelon eating contest. The contest was exciting for the spectators as well as the participants. Each participant dug in without using their hands\, completely disregarding common table manners. This part of the competition made it fun and even more challenging. Hundreds of photos were taken of the red stained faces with watermelon juice dripping from their chins. The best part of the competition was the laughter and smiles from everyone. \nThe Pujols Family Foundation is proud to have partnered with the Down Syndrome Guild of Kansas City on such a successful event. The hundreds of families in attendance were a joy to meet. We are excited for the additional programs and events that we will be a part of as the Foundation’s presence continues in Kansas City.
