Picture Perfect: Fifth Annual Pujols Picture Party Scrapbooking Event
March 23, 2013
As the mothers entered into the Activity Center of Destiny Church in Town and Country, Missouri on March 23rd, 2013, they were greeted by bright spring colors adorning the many tables and enthusiastic demonstrators and volunteers anxiously awaiting the start of the fifth annual Pujols Picture Party Scrapbooking event for mothers who have a child with Down syndrome.
Registration is the first stop as they enter the building. Smiling volunteers are waiting to greet the mothers and provide them with a copy of this year’s Scrapbooking Resource Guide. This includes information that will help guide beginners as well as provide a plethora of creative ideas that will help while designing their own pages.
There are tables set up all across the room, waiting for them to set up their supplies and get to work. For the mothers in attendance that are new to scrapbooking, they can head over to the Scrapbooking Basics station. Beth Bader, from JoAnn Fabrics, is on site to help familiarize them with the basic fundamentals of scrapbooking and the best way to get started. There are other stations set up as well with different Make n’ Take projects. This is a great opportunity for the new scrapbookers to complete a couple of projects with guided assistance. It is exciting to see the creativity that everyone brings to the table. Even though there is a basic layout to follow, it is exhilarating to see how each person makes it their own.
Each participant is also blessed with some scrapbooking goodies that will help them in their journeys. An album is given to each person to display all of their completed pages as well as the paper and embellishments to help create unique layouts.
Just as everyone is getting settled into their own projects, it is already time for lunch. This year’s meal was generously donated by Chick-Fil-A located in Chesterfield. Delicious chicken sandwiches, chips, chocolate chip cookies and sweet tea were served to all in attendance. Comments of satisfaction were popping up across the room as they were enjoying their final bites.
The afternoon was filled with stories, laughter and a lot of sharing, as everyone was showing off their completed projects. People were already talking about the next time they would be able to get together to scrapbook.
This annual spring event is a special time set aside for these mothers in an environment that is just for them. Although the activity of the day itself revolves around scrapbooking, that is just the vehicle to bring everyone together. This event is an opportunity for mothers to reconnect with old friends, as well as make connections with new friends. There is a wide range when it comes to these mother’s children in terms of age and gender but it is their similarities that make their conversations so special.
As everyone is packing up for the day, there is a twinge of sadness. It is amazing how quickly you can connect with the others in attendance. A bond has been formed and strengthened as you share your own personal stories. However, there is a feeling of excitement for the next time and all of the new stories that there will be to share and document.
We would like to extend a very special thank you to the following people that helped make the Pujols Picture Party a success: Destiny Church, Chick-Fil-A, Yvonne Daly (Creative Memories), Beth Bader (JoAnn Fabrics), Studio 411, DNT and all of our volunteers.
