Something’s Cooking

For the past four summers, the Pujols Family Foundation has teamed up with Dierbergs Markets to offer a fun-filled experience to young people with Down syndrome and their parents. Each parent/child team gets a Pujols Batter Up apron and learns to create a delicious meal. The classes were offered on several dates from mid-June through the end of July. Eight parent/child pairs attend each session. The classes were hosted at two locations. The daytime classes were offered at Dierbergs in Creve Coeur, while evening classes were held at the Ellisville location. My daughter and I have been fortunate enough to attend each year and it is one of the highlights of our summer. Each year we are happy to catch up with some old friends and to make some new ones, too.
Everyone in the class participates and we all whip up some scrumptious dishes! There’s a lot of visiting and laughing as we all work together. Each year it’s a different menu and the recipes are easy to prepare. Our family still enjoys making the blueberry French toast we learned to make last year. This year the menu was BLT salad, BBQ chicken melt subs, red, white and blue fruit salad and our favorite, taco tater sticks. My daughter highly recommends dipping them in sour cream! For dessert we made gooey butter brownie bars that taste even better than they sound.
The highlight of the class was when we all got to eat our creations. Before our meal one of the young ladies, Miki Cunningham, led us in a lovely prayer that expressed her gratitude for the friendships we all enjoyed that evening. I think all in attendance were in agreement.
Thanks to the Pujols Family Foundation as well as Dierbergs markets for another great evening of friends, food and fun!
In 2011, the Pujols Family Foundation hosted eighteen Batter-up Cooking Experiences in Missouri, Illinois and Tennessee. Over 250 people attended.
